Board of Directors

Eugene G. Chen - Director

Mr. Chen is currently the President & CEO of UGSI Medical which he founded in 2001. He has over 20 years of experience in the medical device field covering product development, marketing, management, and venture capital. Prior to USGI, Mr. Chen was a venture partner and entrepreneur-in-residence with Alta Partners, a leading life science venture capital firm. Before Alta Partners, he spent seven years at Applied Medical, including as General Manager of the Cardiovascular and Urology operating divisions, Sr. Vice President of Corporate Operations and International distribution. Earlier in his career, Mr. Chen was founder and CEO of BioFlex Inc. and Kinesys Inc., both medical device startups in orthopedic knee orthotics, and held various positions at Procter & Gamble. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University and a MBA from Anderson School of Management at University of California Los Angeles.

Eric Miller - Director

Mr. Miller joined Microfabrica from Baxano Inc., a developer of minimally invasive tools for spine surgery, where he was the Vice President Marketing & Business Development. Prior to that, Mr. Miller was the Senior Vice President of Marketing at Intuitive Surgical Inc., a leader in surgical robotic systems. His extensive background includes general management, marketing and sales roles at US Surgical, Johnson & Johnson and Optimize.

Warren Packard - Director

Mr. Packard is a Managing Director at Draper Fisher Jurvetson. He currently serves on the Boards of BinOptics, BrightLink Networks, Digital Impact (DIGI), DigitalWork, Enviz, FlexICS, Outcome Software, and ServiceMesh. Mr. Packard also led his firm's investments in Microfabrica, Chilisoft (SUNW), Direct Hit (ASKJ), Fogdog Sports (GSPT), and NetMind (PUMA). Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Packard co-founded Angara, an eMarketing infrastructure company that merged with Personify. Prior to Angara, he was an Associate at Institutional Venture Partners. Before IVP, Mr. Packard was a Senior Principal Engineer at Baxter International. Mr. Packard received his BS, MS, and MBA degrees from Stanford University.

Michael Sweeney - Director

Mr. Sweeney is a General Partner at InterWest Partners and focuses on early-stage investment opportunities in the medical technology sector. He serves on the boards of InterWest portfolio companies Cardiac Dimensions, Carbylan Biosurgery, CVRx, Devax, Inspiration Medical, Paracor Medical, and USGI. Mr. Sweeney is a pioneer of multiple anti-arrhythmia cardiac devices, and has more than 20 years experience in the field of cardiovascular technology. He has worked in multiple roles at InterWest: first, as the founding CEO of Epicor Medical, and founder of Ventritex, both highly successful InterWest portfolio companies; later as a InterWest Entrepreneur-in-Residence; then as a Venture Partner, and ultimately as a general partner. Mr. Sweeney received his BA from Drake University.

Kevin Wasserstein - Director

Mr. Wasserstein is a Managing Director at Versant Ventures, a leading healthcare-focused venture capital firm targeting early-stage investments across healthcare. He brings more than 15 years of venture capital and operating experience in medical device and high technology companies, and specializes in investing and building medical device companies from their earliest seed or concept stages through their entire life cycle. Prior to joining Versant in 2002, Mr. Wasserstein served in a variety of marketing and business development roles at Guidant Corporation, including acting as the Director of Marketing in Guidant's Cardiac Surgery Group, and serving in Guidant's Compass Business Development Group, where he was involved in acquisition, licensing and investment activities with both private and public medical device companies, and in formulating corporate strategies to develop innovative medical technologies. He currently serves, or has served, in a variety of board or advisory roles with companies which include: Acclarent (sold), Cellutions, LipoSonix (sold), NDO Surgical (sold), NeoGuide Systems, Rox Medical, Second Sight Medical, St. Francis Medical (sold) and The Innovation Factory. Mr. Wasserstein holds BS and MS degrees both in Mechanical Engineering, as well as a MBA, from Stanford University.
